I was looking for some option to have a mobile wireless that will be with me while traveling within India or sometime when traveling in foreign countries. I needed something that could work as wireless network

* to connect my laptops and ipod (smartphone) or anyother device simultaneously.

* can provide internet (wireless) to gadgets that do not have usb ports (or other datacard ports) like ipod touch, ipod, ipad and other similar palmtops.

* be with me while traveling (in car, in bus, in train, at home, in office or in hotel)

* can share the internet with colleagues or friends (if needed).

* should not be an expensive as well.

There could be many way to do part of it. Like Datacards (or dongles) are available from major mobile carriers (TATA, Reliance, Airtel ...). But these datacard/dongles can be used with one laptop at a time or GPRS net can work on either smartphone or on laptop datacard at a time. Will not work with many devices which can be connected by WiFi only. WiMax may be available in some area but not throughout the India.

I did a quite enough search for some device for above purpose. I found few and thought of sharing the information to everyone (may be it serve reference for me when back in India).

It is MiFi devices (that makes the wireless network from your phone card/data card). Many are available in USA through mobile service providers (like verizon .. but need a contract/plan and that makes them expensive).

Following gadgets I found on search (though I have not tested these, but by features it appear that these can serve the purpose).

1. Leoxsys

This one I found recently by an Indian company Leoxsys. This router support all the usb 3g/4g dongles. It is very sleek in design. Built-in 1500mAh lithium ion battery, it can act as a hotspot for several hours without being connected to a power outlet (exact battery time is not mentioned in description). With support to the latest HSDPA /HSUPA / HSPA + / LTE technology, you will be able to enjoy a super high-speed mobile broadband up to 42Mbps! Change to new 3G/4G router will not be required in future.

The price is not mentioned but can be had from this link as the contact address of the supplier/manufacurer is provided on the site. Link is

(also the picture is different on the link when you enlarge the image on above link)

In response to an email enquiry, Leoxsys informed that it has three different short of routers and price range is around Rs. 5000.

2. CradlePoint

This is one company whose product (router) description directly mention the support for Indian mobile company like TATA telecommunications. This company has three different routers for mobile application (see at this link .. http://www.cradlepoint.com/category-lists/mobile-workforce )

Cradlepoint PHS300One I think is suitable for mobility (as it is battery and AC powered) and any USB dongle (like TATA photon) can plugged into it to get wireless mobile within minutes any where, is Cradlepoint PHS 300. Its is selling in $91 on Amazone.

Other two more router from this company are CTR500 and CTR350. You can check these two at above link if you like. These are little different feature wise and application, like these are not having battery.

3. Novatel

Novatel MiFi routers are available in US market for different carriers. For some you have take dataplan (that is expensive).

Novatel has many different MiFi routers with different features.

The one is

Novatel Wireless MiFi 2352 - Wireless cellular modem - external - GPRS, UMTS, EDGE, HSDPA, HSUPA - 7.2 Mbps - 802.11b, 802.11g

This is selling in hefty price of ~ $230.

4. Huawei

Huawei has MiFi routers and are supplied by many mobile companies (like Virgin).

The recent one is Huawei E585. It has many features and probably can work in India (Reliance is having many Huawei products for wireless particularly I know of Wireless dongle).

There are many Chinese routers for 3G network and selling very cheap as well. But I could not find with particular brand. You use if you find one suitable.

With theses options, it appears that WiFi could be in my bag always and will be carrying WiFi with me where ever I go. What a lovely utility of technology.

Few smartphones itself has the capability of sharing the wireless with other devices. While going through the Google Nexus, I found this feature stating the availability of all the HSPA features and wireless sharing.

The cost wise the smartphones may prove expensive on your pocket.

There may be product from mobile company itself. Vodafone has mobile MiFi device (no idea about details). I will update the list as I come to know about more devices.

Details

  • Additional Info Please leave the comments or give information about any other device you know (in comments). I will update the list. This note is to inform about the related product and not for promotion of particular brand.
